Productive Surfing

 April 22, 2023

All of us have spent lots of time "surfing".  Quietly watching other people enjoying life, crafting, sports,

Influencers, etc.  So what do we get out of it?  not much other than an escape from whatever is going on in our lives.  Is it bad? not really, just a wasting of precious time.  Now do we need to be productive at all times?  Noooo.  But can we develop something out of it?

I say yes.  Its a search engine for interesting things.  Whether Hollywood gossip or hobbies.  It an engagement in people, places and things.  Ideas and advice we didn't know we needed.  All good, except for just one thing.  Can we find a way to feel better about this time spent on "unproductive" surfing?

As a believer in positive thinking and doing, it can direct us to some growth and therefore productive endeavors.

I come from a long line of fiber artists.  Some out of necessity and some for economic gain. My Grandmother made braided rugs, and crocheted and sewed.  I have a bunch of clothing she made for my dolls, whaat?  My Mom was a sewer and eventually a quilter.  She went all over to see quilt shows and workshops, which we can now experience on Instagram or whatever social media you like.

I am a fiber artist, self described, but still...I love the posts on Instagram about crafts involving fabric, embroidery, some quilting( not a fan of cutting up tiny pieces of fabric), crocheting, not knitting( the tension is too hard to master) etc.  Its the colors, textures, and manipulation of these mediums that fascinate and inspire me to create.

It takes some effort to curate these posts and the people behind them.  yes I know that I am a "target", but who cares if I'm getting something out of it?  I have a few people I am following that I am happy to share.

My latest obsession is: SueSpargo.  Her story is interesting and her art is fabulous.  Lots of wool embroidery, some quilting, and she has her own store.  Major score.

I have been following MMMCrafts for some time now.  Purchased many of her patterns that use wool felt and embroidery.

Another is: Fabricandink, darling story teller and embroiderer.  Each of these interesting people draw inspiration from their own background and experiences.

So people, so can we!

Keep pursuing your passions, however you like.  I am tired of hearing "in these uncertain times"

Has there not been many past episodes of uncertainty?  We are not reinventing the wheel here, just seeking some organization out of chaos.  Not a new concept.

So go out there and productively "surf"  your favorite search engines and social media sites.  Seek out those beautiful, stimulating images that inspire you.

Just please no more animals eating eachother.
